WightAID grants go to four Island causes

Four Island organisations have received a share of £5,317 from WightAID, in the latest round of community grants.

The largest award went to Medina Marching Band, which received £3,317 to restore 15 instruments ahead of the group’s 50th anniversary in 2026. The band has around 100 members, starting from age eight, and aims to make music accessible to all.

A band spokesman said: “This restoration will allow our musicians to perform with renewed pride and professionalism, celebrating our legacy with instruments worthy of the milestone.”

The Isle of Wight Cricket Board was awarded £1,000 towards summer cricket camps for children aged 11–14, including those new to the sport and others already active at clubs.

Wroxall Woolies received £500 to support their coffee and craft mornings in the village. The funding will be used to run a sandwich bar, offering home-made food and drinks. Members of the group produce knitted items for donation to causes including children’s wards, foodbanks and animal charities.

Their lunch club has proved so popular over winter, that members have asked for it to continue into the summer.

Shanklin Regatta, now in its 172nd year, was also awarded £500 towards the cost of this year’s event on August 14, which will include music, dancing, sports and a beach firework display.

WightAID founder, Geoff Underwood, said: “Our cheque presentations are a great opportunity for charities and donors to connect and exchange ideas in person.”
