LOOK BACK IN TIME: 9 June 1888

If you ever find yourself worrying that internet doomsayers and self‑appointed ‘experts’ are a curse of modern life, be reassured that the Isle of Wight Observer was reporting similar concerns in this article published on 9th June, 1888.

The advice to only make ‘prophecies’ after the events is probably wise, but wouldn’t sell many books.

Coming Prophetic Events. – A correspondent writes to ask if the Rev. M. Baxter, who lectured in the Town Hall, on the above subject, last Sunday, is the “M. Baxter” who some twenty years ago published a book entitled “Louis Napoleon the Antichrist ?” in which he predicted from Daniel and the Revelations, that this “antichrist” would subjugate the world by awful wars, and fierce tribulations, &c., ending in the Millennium. Now, as past events have totally upset his prophetic theories, if the lecturer be the same “M. Baxter” who wrote this book and predicted such absurd nonsense, what credence can be placed upon his present prophetic assertions about “Coming Prophetic Events?” Such false prophets would be wise to prophesy after the events, and consequently not make fools of themselves by having their predictions falsified by events in history, as the “M. Baxter” of “Louis Napoleon the Antichrist” and the Rev. Dr. Cummings did.
