With an aim of giving ‘Hope and Focus’ to the young people and their families, the South Wight Area Youth Partnership (SWAY) is a group unique for its holistic offerings. Since 2014, SWAY has been reaching out to young people across the south (the ‘Back o’ the Wight’) from Whitwell to Brook. Their hard work was recognised last year when they were awarded the King’s Award for Voluntary Service.
All aged between 10 and 21 are welcome to get involved with their variety of activities. From weekly youth groups to one-to-one mentoring; from outdoor adventures to learning at home with Zoom cooking; from attending a group to learning to lead with the young leaders’ programme – there’s an opportunity for everyone to get involved in something they’ll love.
“We really engage with the young people, families and the communities by getting involved in the community events and activities as well as arranging our own,” explained Joanna Richards, of SWAY. “Many of our young people remain with us as staff and volunteers which is so encouraging. Our partnership, with parish councils, community groups, schools, churches and individuals, is a huge strength.
“SWAY is here to support young people and their families to engage and grow as individuals through a variety of activities that brings them together to enjoy healthy relationships in a positive environment,” Joanna added. “We help them to explore their potential and become more resilient whilst building a stronger community and increasing engagement.”
