Farmers out in force against inheritance tax

Farmers were out in force in Newport on Saturday, in an event organised by the National Farmers Union as part of its ‘Stop the Family Farm Tax’ campaign, which is urging the Government to consult with the NFU on the changes to inheritance tax.

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, announced in her October budget that, under new proposals, farmers face reduced tax relief on inherited land, making it increasingly difficult to pass farms down through generations without significant financial strain.

At the event, Island farmers engaged with the public to talk about the negative impact of the government’s plans on food security, rural communities, and the farming industry as a whole.

NFU Chairman, Robyn Munt, said: “It was a really positive day talking to people about our concerns and about our passion for producing British food and managing the Island landscape, which was recognised and appreciated by the Islanders we spoke with.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who came along to speak to us, and showed their support to farmers by signing our petition which nationally now has more than 274,000 signatures.”
