Story Garden takes root in Island’s young minds

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge is now under way at Island libraries, with the 2025 theme, Story Garden: Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors, already proving a hit with young readers.

Running throughout the school summer holidays, the free programme is available at all 11 Island libraries, including those managed by community volunteers. Children aged four and over can take part, with a mini-challenge also available for younger readers.

Participants are invited to read six books of their choosing, fiction or non-fiction, collecting stickers and prizes along the way. On completion, they receive a certificate and medal to mark their achievement.

Each child is also given a fold-out poster to track their progress. The challenge is designed to maintain literacy skills over the summer break and boost confidence, especially among reluctant readers.

Councillor Paul Brading, chairman of the children’s services, education and skills committee, said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is a brilliant way to keep children engaged and learning during the holidays. It’s not just about reading; it’s about imagination, exploration and confidence-building.”

Island libraries are also hosting a programme of free, nature-themed activities to complement the challenge and encourage creativity.

Families can sign up at any local library. For more information, visit www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk, follow @iwlibraries on Facebook, or see the IW Council’s libraries page.
