Island walkers rally to save John’s Club

A fund-raising “Walk the Week” walk is taking place to support John’s Club, a much-loved Island charity offering vital services to vulnerable members of the community.

The walk has been organised to help raise essential funds, and awareness for the future of the club, which now faces an uncertain future. The walk organiser, Jo Plater, spoke emotionally about the importance of the group and her father’s dedication.

“It’s hard to think the club could close,” she said. “My dad has poured years of love and commitment into John’s Club. It’s more than a place – it’s a lifeline for so many people.”

Founded to provide a safe, welcoming space where individuals can make friends without judgement, John’s Club has become a cornerstone for those needing support, social interaction, and a sense of belonging. The charity promotes independence and helps people build confidence and practical life skills, all while creating a strong sense of community.

“Many of us take those things for granted, but for our members they’re life changing,” she added.

“Over recent weeks, the kind words and generous support we’ve received have been overwhelming; we’re incredibly grateful.”

The team behind the fund-raiser, which will involve walking 125 miles across and around the Island, is urging the local community to support however they can by donating, spreading the word, or simply cheering them on.

“John’s Club deserves to grow and continue supporting Islanders for many more years to come,” Jo added. “Please help us keep that dream alive.”
