A 26-year-old man has been jailed after leading police on a dangerous high-speed chase through Newport and East Cowes, narrowly avoiding collisions with oncoming traffic.
Callum Bryan Hickman, of Princes Court, Southampton, was sentenced to 14 months in prison at Newport Crown Court on Thursday, July 4 after admitting to dangerous driving.
Hickman, who was disqualified from driving and uninsured at the time, was spotted in a red Citroen C3 by officers in an unmarked police car on Fairlee Road at around 11.20am on Sunday, August 4, 2024.
When signalled to stop, he fled at speeds reaching 90mph, leading officers on a pursuit along Whippingham Road, Beatrice Avenue, and back towards Fairlee Road, where he drove on the wrong side and struck several vehicles.
Due to the growing risk to the public, officers were forced to abandon the chase. However, Hickman continued to drive recklessly, heading the wrong way down Medina Way’s dual carriageway, before veering down an on-slip road towards River Way.
He eventually lost control near Topps Tiles and crashed off the roundabout before fleeing the scene on foot.
He was later arrested and charged. The court heard that dash cam and CCTV footage captured the near misses and reckless driving during the incident.
Hickman was sentenced to 14 months’ imprisonment for dangerous driving.
