Islanders are being invited to share their views on the future of the Cowes–East Cowes floating bridge, as the IW Council launches a consultation this month.
It follows a cabinet decision last year to replace the existing chain ferry, and the commissioning of a new River Medina Crossing Strategy to ensure the best value for council taxpayers. Transport experts have since been reviewing crossing options based on cost, reliability, sustainability, and congestion impact.
Three options are now being put forward: replacing the current vessel with a new floating bridge (FB7); modifying the existing vessel, including changes such as tidal flow reduction or added thrusters; or maintaining the current vessel with continued use of the push boat.
Proposals for a Medina bridge or tunnel, a new vessel type, or scrapping the crossing entirely, have all been ruled out.
Drop-in events will be held from 3pm to 7pm at East Cowes Town Hall on July 22, Northwood House in Cowes on July 23, and the Riverside Centre, Newport, on July 31. Online sessions will also take place on August 7 (12–1.30pm) and August 12 (6–7.30pm).
Islanders can also share feedback via the council’s website. The consultation closes on August 22.
Council leader, Phil Jordan, said: “We want to hear from as many users as possible. This is about getting the future of the crossing right for both communities and ensuring a reliable link for the years ahead.”
