Wight Tri go the distance in calm Duver conditions

Club members at the start.

It was smooth sailing for 21 members of Wight Tri, who took part in the third of the club’s summer swim-run events, at the Duver on Friday.

Participants chose between a 200m (219yd) or 400m (437yd) swim around two orange buoys in calm, warm waters, with water-safety volunteers keeping watch by kayak and bodyboard. Swimmers were greeted ashore with words of encouragement and enjoyed the evening sun, before heading out on a 2.9km (1 4/5 miles) or 5.1km (3 1/5 miles) run.

The course began with a steep climb to St Helens Green, followed by a gentle descent offering views across the Causeway. All runners returned safely, if a little hot and breathless.

Newcomer Tracey Sedman-Holdsworth impressed by almost matching her predicted time of 29 minutes for the short course, crossing the line in 29m 22s. Fastest on the long course were Lucy Doorly (37m 39s) and Craig Wilson (29m 33s).

The next Wight Tri event will be an aquabike, at Yaverland, on Friday, August 1, at 6pm. Anyone interested in joining the club can email: secretary@wighttri.org.uk.
