All-rounder, Matt Lambourne, helped Shanklin secure the Island’s only Hampshire league success, Ryde’s Ben Gregory took 4 wickets, the Whizzer’s Vishnu Ravi claimed 5, and Shanklin’s George Speller hit a match-winning 153 not out.
Hampshire Leagues
Shanklin & Godshill won by 71 runs away at Gosport Borough, in Division Three B, after setting a score of 216–9, including a boundary-strewn 80 from opener, Matt Lambourne, and 25 from Harry Moore. Gosport were limited to 145 all out, with spinner, Lambourne, taking 4–34, with Tom Quaife and Moore taking 2 wickets each.
In Hants Division Two B, Ventnor II XI lost by 6 wickets away at Burridge, with the Island side batting first in a reduced over match, scoring 143–8 in 37 overs. Charlie Turpin struck a quickfire 45, with Ethan Short adding 31 and Charlie Turpin 21 not out. In reply, Burridge exceeded the run-rate, hitting 147–4 in 25 overs, with Tom Southcott returning 3–37.
Ryde also lost, going down by 112 runs at home to Lymington, with the visitors setting a target of 240 all out in the 45th over. Skipper, Ben Gregory, took 4–37, including a catch off his own bowling, with Ash Goldsmith returning 3–56. In reply, the Island side saw an opening partnership of 45 between Ethan Fields (35) and Goldsmith (11), and then lost a steady flow of wickets, with 22 from Gregory and 16 from Jackson Summers, ending the innings at 128 in the 40th over.
IW Leagues and Cups
In Division One, home-side Northwood beat Ryde II by 125 runs. Batting first Kerry Rice hit 78, with opener, George Griffith, adding 42, to help ’Wood score 269–5 from 40 overs. Jerin Padavath’s 37 helped Ryde reach 144 before being bowled out in the 37th over, with Simon Goldsmith claiming 3 wickets.
Leaders Newport won by 166 runs away at Ventnor III, scoring 302–5 off 40 overs, including a sparkling 91 from opener, Gareth Bricknell. This was followed by 85 from Steven Steinmetz and 48 from Tom Dye, with Jackson Parker returning 3–44 for the losing Ventnor. In reply, skipper Gary Legg’s 65 was the main resistance as they were bowled out for 136 in the 24th over, with ’Port’s Aaron Hartup taking 4–44.
Wight Whizzers won by 16 runs at home to St Helens, in a closely contested match. The Whizzers were all out for 256, with opener, Nithin Sunil, hitting 89, including 3 sixes, with Vishnu Ravi unbeaten on 35, and Vara Vara returning 4–59 for St Helens. Opener Mark Watson’s 78 contributed to St Helens brave reply, but they were bowled out in the 39th over, for 240 with Ravi taking 5–34.
In Division Two, leaders Newport II won by 1 wicket at home to Arreton, after Arreton’s skipper, Josh White, hit an unbeaten 65 from a total of 140–6 off 35 overs, with 2 wickets for Pranay Singh. Newport struggled to gain momentum, losing wickets regularly, with 6 Arreton bowlers taking wickets, including Mia Norris and Noah Cherry. Ellis Hinckley’s 29 helped Newport reach 141–9 in the 32nd over and claim the win.
Shanklin & Godshill’s III XI claimed victory over their II XI by 7 wickets, with the second XI scoring 230–5, including 71 from skipper/opener, Steve Billington, and 40 from Ollie Maidment, with Matthew Manning returning 2–35 for the thirds. Opener, George Speller, hit an unbeaten 153, before retiring, as the III XI reached 236–3 in the 29th over.
Ventnor IV won their Fred Winter Cup match by 3 wickets at home to Cowes, who set a target of 190–5. Luke Ridout contributed 54 not out, and Josh Rice 40, with Matteo Burgess returned 2–46. In reply, Ventnor opener, Jess Glover, struck 58, alongside co-opener, Nat Wells’ 48, to help the home-side reach 191–7 in the 33rd over. There were 2 wickets apiece from Ridout and Scott Rice.
With Ventnor’s 1st XI’s match rained off, the club is looking forward to hosting the MCC on Sunday, July 27, with free admission from 11.30am, as part of the 175th anniversary celebrations. Ventnor will be skippered by Dan Cox and the MCC is likely to field former Ventnor all-rounder, Ross Whyte.
