Walk in memory of Ralph Fenton

By Press Release Jun 2, 2023

Two lifelong pals have walked around the Island this week, to raise more than £5,000 for Brain Tumour Research.

Lisa Fenton, 52, grew up on the Island and is doing the walk, in memory of her late brother, Ralph, who died aged 25, from brain cancer 25 years ago.

Lisa now works for the Bishop of Blackburn, the Right Rev Philip North, and is being supported by her friend, Alison Otto.

She explained: “I was wondering what to do about marking this special occasion and thought this would be a great tribute. We set off from All Saints’ Church, Freshwater, on Monday and will finish there later this afternoon (Friday).

“The Island is very special to our family and Ralph’s ashes are buried in the churchyard.

“I still come back to visit the Island every year for a holiday, as it holds so many happy memories of my childhood, and Alison has also been a regular visitor here.

“Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet just one per cent of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease.”

Alison’s family was well-known in the West Wight. Her parents were Ted and Ruth Fenton. He was in the navy and worked on nuclear submarines and was a local footballer. Her grandfather, also Ted, was a popular builder.
