Sun shines on sailing day for RVYC disabled guests

Nearly 90 guests enjoyed a day of sailing, music and good food at this year’s Royal Victoria Yacht Club open day for people with disabilities, held in glorious sunshine on July 12.

The club has hosted the event since 1981, which was the International Year of Disabled Persons and the event continues to welcome guests from across the Island.

This year, 46 boat trips took place along Wootton Creek and out into the Solent. Guests could experience the thrill of fast RIBs or enjoy more relaxed journeys on motor-launches, Strong Arm and Victoria.

Specially-adapted vessels, Wet Wheels and Spirit of Scott Bader, provided access for wheelchair users, while Cowes Sailability’s Iris, Vikla IV and Stampede were also in high demand.

Guests included individuals and families, supported by Sight for Wight, Mountbatten Hospice and Hazelwood House.

Deputy Lieutenant, Patrick Seely, High Sheriff, Jacque Gazzard, IW Chairman, Cllr Ian Dore, and Fishbourne parish councillor, Cheryl Fontana, joined the day, meeting guests, carers and volunteers.

More than 60 RVYC members volunteered their time and boats. Event co-ordinator, Steve Sheridan, said: “This event simply couldn’t happen without the wonderful support of RVYC members, who give their time and their boats so generously.”

Home-made cakes were donated by Grace’s Bakery and club members, and a number of musicians performed free of charge.
