STAR LETTER: From cruelty to kindness

Dear Editor,

I was concerned to read ‘RSPCA issues urgent appeal’ in the July 25 issue of the IW Observer.

I remain shocked that we have cruelty, neglect and abuse to animals on the Island. Recently my friend and I were involved with taking a very distressed emaciated cat with severe mouth problems to the vet associated with our local RSPCA Isle of Wight Branch. The next day my daughter and I decided to visit the RSPCA at Bohemia Corner, with a view to adopting this very unwell cat. Sadly, a cancerous growth was found in its mouth which could not be treated; he was not microchipped and had to be put to sleep.

My daughter and I completed a form on the RSPCA website and were given an appointment to meet the kittens they were currently caring for in the cat sanctuary at the centre and, of course, we fell in love with two kittens, now called Izzy and Max. They were found in a house where over 25 cats were languishing in dreadful conditions, many undernourished and emaciated. We have given them their forever home and they give us unconditional love.

We now donate by doing our on-line shopping using Easyfunding, having selected our charity as RSPCA Isle of Wight Branch. Friends are giving a regular donation with gift aid to this charity. It is important to make sure you donate to RSPCA Isle of Wight Branch, and not RSPCA, as those funds are not donated to our local branch. If everyone on the Island supported RSPCA Isle of Wight Branch we could reduce cruelty to animals significantly. A little bit of kindness goes a long way. Please support this very worthy cause.
