Generating your own clean energy no longer requires a large roof. Following new regulations introduced on August 27, Green Isle of Wight has launched a service to help Islanders safely install plug-in balcony solar.
These compact systems can be mounted on balconies, terraces, gardens or walls. By plugging directly into a suitable UK socket, households can generate daytime electricity to run background appliances like fridges and computers. This reduces the amount of power you need to buy from the grid.
The updated regulatory framework allows ordinary householders to install compliant systems up to 800 watts without needing a dedicated electrical circuit. However, buying an unverified system from a third-party marketplace can be risky. Green Isle of Wight provides a free space assessment and helps find local suppliers and installers who meet the required government specifications.
The initiative is available to homeowners and tenants who have written permission from their landlord. Importantly, choosing this local resource means you are directly supporting the community. Income generated through the service funds Green Isle of Wight’s wider work to help residents facing fuel poverty.
