Two of Newport’s historic attractions will open their doors free this month, as part of the national heritage open days celebrations.
The Museum of Island History, in Newport Guildhall, will welcome visitors tomorrow (Saturday), from 10am to 1pm, with exhibits tracing the Island’s story from prehistoric times to the present day.
The opening coincides with heritage day activities across Newport, and a special immersive theatre walk celebrating the life and work of poet, Charlotte Mew.
Created by StoneCrabs Theatre, the experience begins at 11am at the Yellowfin Propeller, opposite Quay Arts, before taking participants through Newport as Mew’s story is brought to life through performance. It concludes with a presentation and visit to the museum.
Museum admission is free with no booking required, while the Charlotte Mew walk costs £10 and must be booked in advance.
Next Saturday (September 19), Newport Roman Villa, in Cypress Road, will be open free of charge from 10am to 2pm.
Visitors can explore the remains of the 3rd-century Roman farmhouse, discovered 100 years ago in 1926, including its preserved bath suite, hypocaust heating system, and Roman-style garden.
Free guided tours will take place at 10.30am, 11.15am, noon and 12.45pm, while visitors can also explore the site independently throughout the day.
The events form part of heritage open days, England’s largest community-led festival of history and culture.
