The Church of St Alban the Martyr, in upper Ventnor, celebrates its centenary this month with a special service next Sunday (June 25).
The Romanesque-style church was designed by renowned Ventnor architect, Francis Coley, and is known as one of Ventnor’s little-known gems. It is situated on a hill in the quiet cul-de-sac of St. Alban’s Road, and next to St. Alban’s Steps, which used to be the main pedestrian route between upper and lower Ventnor. The building boasts interesting architecture, fine acoustics and houses many interesting artefacts.
St. Alban’s was the late Poet Laureate, Sir John Betjeman’s favourite church on the Island.
The special Evensong service takes place on June 25, at 4pm. All are welcome to the service, based on the book of Common Prayer, which will also be supported by Traditional Anglian Mission Of Saint Barnabas
