A potentially serious wildfire, near Browns Golf and Dinosaur Isle, in Sandown, was swiftly contained last Friday, thanks to the sharp eyes of a local environment officer and the prompt action of Island firefighters.
Davide Fossa, on patrol as part of the enhanced environment officer, funded by Sandown Town Council, spotted smoke rising from nearby undergrowth during a routine inspection, acting quickly, he dialled 999 and guided people away from the area to ensure their safety.
“I knew every second counted,” said Davide. “I made the call and focused on keeping the public at a safe distance until the fire crews arrived.”
Firefighters were on the scene within minutes, launching what Davide described as a ‘military-style operation’ to bring the blaze under control before it could spread to nearby homes, businesses, or Sandown’s treasured nature reserve.
Davide is one of just four environment officers working for the IW council. Their vital role includes inspecting public spaces, enforcing environmental regulations, and working closely with communities to promote responsible behaviour.
Local mayor, Cllr Alex Lightfoot, said: “This is a clear example of how partnership working benefits Sandown.”
Authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant during dry weather and follow fire safety advice to help prevent wildfires.
