My Fair Lady review by Abbi Leverton

I had the great pleasure of watching the recent production of My Fair Lady on the Apollo stage. Knowing the show relatively well already, my hopes were high, and I was not disappointed.

Musically, the show was a great success. It is a challenge to sing a whole show to a backing track, but every member of the cast managed it with great skill and care for the overall feel of each song. Opening a song unaccompanied while holding harmonies is hard and it was a treat to hear this done well. The sound balance and diction were excellent, and no-one was overpowered by the sound system.

The wardrobe department had pulled out all the stops to create costumes which were spot on for the era, and looked especially beautiful when everyone was together for the ‘big numbers’ – With a Little Bit of Luck, The Ascot Gavotte, Get Me To The Church On Time and The Embassy Ball.

The person who really stood out was our eminent Professor, played by Phillip Griffiths. His decisive manner and purely logical approach to life was endearing and when he started to sing I was transported. In the latter part of the show, we see his softer side. I was close to tears by half-way through Accustomed To Her Face. It was remorseful and poignant, making Eliza’s return all the more joyful.

Reg and Claire Fussell did a great job of directing, and the cast and crew executed the vision with enthusiasm and commitment. A real gem – well done everyone!
