Music at the Minster is special fund-raiser

Wight Harmony performing at the concert

A festive evening at Newport Minster has raised more than £6,000 for Wessex Cancer Support, drawing over 200 Islanders to its Christmas concert on Saturday.

The event, Music at the Minster, showcased a rich mix of musical talent from across the Isle of Wight. Performers included the Melodic Choir, Wight Harmony barbershop choir, singer Ruby, brass musician, Glynis Marsh, and harpist, Bella Brown. Jay Eatwell, known from Channel 4’s The Piano, also performed alongside Theatretrain students.

The evening began in true festive style with a procession by the Isle of Wight Highland Pipes & Drums, welcoming special guest, HM Lord-Lieutenant Susie Sheldon. Attendees were treated not only to a wide variety of performances but also stories shared by Wessex Cancer Support clients, who highlighted the tangible impact of the charity’s work.

The evening closed with music from Double Take.

Laura Haytack, regional fund-raising manager for the charity, expressed her gratitude to everyone who contributed.

“Newport Minster was the perfect setting, and seeing so many come together made it a truly special occasion,” she said. Special thanks were extended to supporters and sponsors of the event.

The charity, which provides vital support for thousands annually through its Newport centre and Daisy Bus service to help Island patients access mainland treatment, relies entirely on donations. Events like this are crucial to continuing its work for the Island community.
