A century ago, the Isle of Wight’s weather watchers were already keeping a close eye on the skies. This report from the Isle of Wight Observer published on 8th July, 1922 reveals June’s sunshine and rainfall records compared with the previous year, and notes that by the end of the month, 1922 had already matched the total rainfall recorded during the whole of 1921.
Sunshine and Rain. – The official record of sunshine for June was 226.70 hours, against 252 hours for the corresponding month last year. There were five sunless days, and the maximum amount of sunshine was on the 12th, 14 hours. Rain to the extent of 1.17 inches fell on thirteen days, the heaviest fall (a quarter of an inch) being last Wednesday. There was no rain in June 1921. The total rain for the present year now equals that for the whole of 1921.
