IW summer picture sale in St Lawrence

‘To the Lighthouse, St Catherine’s’ in oil by Alina Maslowski

A sale of important Isle of Wight paintings, watercolours and prints dating from the 1770s to the present day by some of Great Britain’s most celebrated artists is taking place at Lisle Combe, Undercliff Drive, St Lawrence, on August 2 and 3.

The show includes works by Martin Swan RSMA, Colin Richens RMS ASEA, Ann Knowler SWA, and celebrated 19th-century topographical artists including Professor William Gray and Edward William Cooke RA.

The show also features a large watercolour by Josiah Taylor, painted in 1877, depicting the Royal Yacht Squadron schooner race between Corinne (160 tons) and Miranda (135 tons) in the Western Solent, off Hurst Castle. Alongside these, twenty of the Island’s leading contemporary artists will be exhibiting a diverse range of exceptional works. In addition, the show includes important Isle of Wight topographical books and prints.

The exhibition, which has been arranged by Professor Robin McInnes, is taking place at the historic Cottage Orné marine villa, Lisle Combe, which is situated on the seaward side of Undercliff Drive, ⅓ mile or 600 metres west of the entrance to Ventnor Botanic Garden. Lisle Combe was the former home of the celebrated author and poet, Alfred Noyes (1880–1958), and the exhibition is taking place there with kind permission of Mr and Mrs Robert Noyes.

The picture sale is open from 10am–4pm. Admission free. Signposted on Undercliff Drive, PO38 1UW.
