Gordon Endler Memorial ride continued through the rain

Early morning rain put a dampener on the sixth annual Gordon Endler Memorial Ride, which took place on Saturday.

Around 60 riders took part in the event to support the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance, continuing a tradition that began in memory of Gordon, a well-known local biker who died in a road traffic incident in July 2020. His partner, Jacqui Stannett, was a pillion passenger, and survived thanks to the quick response of the Air Ambulance crew who airlifted her to Southampton General Hospital.

Organiser Jon Flexi said: “The weather definitely affected the numbers, but there’s not much you can do about that.

“It was still a great day with people joining us from the mainland to help with the marshalling. Gordon was also a member of the Solent 1990s Sportsbike group, which is based on the mainland, so he was well known there and people continue to come over to support our ride.”

Despite the disappointing numbers, Jono said that it is hoped the event will expand next year, adding: “We hope it will be held over two days with more emphasis on entertainment with live music to include the general public on the second day. We’re in the process of planning things now.”

Riders, led by Jacqui and Gordon’s son, Joe, stopped off at Freshwater Bay and Blackgang viewpoint along the route, before returning to the airport. Volunteers from the two charities were on hand to collect funds and raise awareness.
