The Isle of Wight Council’s Community Equipment Store has completed a major effort to give paediatric equipment a second life overseas.
Much of the equipment, previously used to support children on the Island, had reached the end of its manufacturer‑approved lifespan in the UK. Although it could no longer be used locally, it remained in good condition and had the potential to make a significant difference elsewhere.
Operational lead Danielle Marriott and colleague Hollie Griffiths sought alternatives to scrapping the items and eventually partnered with Phoenix Resource Centre, a UK charity that refurbishes equipment before sending it to countries where it is urgently needed. The consignment from the Island will be shipped to Djibouti in East Africa to support children with limited access to healthcare.
A spokesman for the Community Equipment Store said the project was about ensuring valuable resources could continue to help children and families rather than go to waste. Phoenix Resource Centre welcomed the donation and praised the team for making the journey, saying the equipment would bring hope and practical support to families who otherwise have very little.
A spokesman for Red Funnel, who shipped the equipment to the mainland said the company was pleased to assist.
