We asked a couple of the Island’s high profile residents what they were planning over the festive season – and about their resolutions for 2026. This is what they told us.
Susie Sheldon – Lord-Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight
I always reckon New Year’s Resolutions should be positive things I am going to do, rather than things that I should stop doing.
So how about: Make time to do more sport, relax listening to music, read for pleasure, and spend time with the family. Smile more, laugh more.
As for last year’s resolutions, that is such a long time ago I can’t remember!
Jacque Gazzard – High Sheriff of the Isle of Wight
Over Christmas, I shall no doubt eat too much and drink a delicious toast or three with friends and family. A few good walks over New Year and a weekly swim, with the Bembridge Swans, will let me pretend I can work it off in 2026!
Ian Dore – Chairman of the Isle of Wight Council
I’ve already started with some lovely mince pies from Dan at the Old Barracks. I didn’t make any resolutions last year, so I achieved the goal of not breaking any this year. Winner! Christmas remains family focused with my little ones. Lots of play inside and out, lots of laughs and the odd party with friends in between. Then for the New Year: a bit of overdue health and fitness, burning off the pounds as a result of said gorgeous mince pies. Ho Ho Ho.
Richard Quigley – MP for the West Wight
Over Christmas, I’ll be eating more chocolate than I’ll admit to. Cooking, have a secret nap when no one is looking, and enjoying some wine.
I stopped making New Year’s Resolutions many years ago as they made me (and as a consequence my wife) miserable by about January 15.
Joe Robertson – MP for the East Wight
I am reliably informed that I drink too much coffee, so my New Year’s resolution will be to cut down on caffeine! I also plan to do more exercise and try and keep healthy.
