The Island’s biggest youth-focused community carnival returns to Ryde tomorrow (Saturday), with a celebration of Island folklore, myths and legends.
IW Mardi Gras, organised by New Carnival, will bring hundreds of participants and spectators together for a colourful celebration of creativity, culture, and community.
This year’s theme, Folktastic Isle: Stories, Myths and Legends, has inspired schools, community groups, artists, and performers to explore local folklore, legendary characters, and hidden stories.
More than 23 schools and community groups have been creating hand-made costumes, puppets, performances, and parade pieces, inspired by Island stories and imagination.
The day begins with Mini Mardi Gras, at Simeon Street recreation ground, from 11am to 3pm, with free family activities, creative workshops, circus skills, music-making, the Heron Guard, and local food stalls.
The main parade sets off at 3pm, weaving through Ryde town centre before returning to Simeon Street recreation ground.
Visitors can expect giant puppets, samba bands, colourful costumes, live performances, and a showcase of community creativity.
The event forms part of the IW Biosphere Festival, and supports the National Year of Reading campaign.
Hannah Ray, chief executive of New Carnival, said: “IW Mardi Gras is a celebration of the creativity, talent, and community spirit that exists across the Isle of Wight.
“This year’s theme gives participants the opportunity to explore the Island’s rich folklore while creating something truly spectacular together.”
