Military aircraft exercise to bring fast jets and helicopters over Isle of Wight skies next week

Isle of Wight residents and aviation enthusiasts are being urged to keep their eyes on the horizons next week, as a major military air exercise is set to take place across the region.

A newly-issued Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) alert reveals that up to eight military aircraft will be conducting high-energy manoeuvres from Monday (July 6) to Friday. The massive operational footprint stretches from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire and Grimsby, down across the English Channel, and over to RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset, putting the Isle of Wight directly beneath the tactical transit zone.

While official details regarding exact timings and specific squadrons remain classified, the exercise is likely to feature a mix of fast jets and maritime helicopters practicing complex evasion and joint strike tracking. Island skies could see spectacular appearances from Eurofighter Typhoons, alongside Wildcat and Merlin helicopters. These rotary craft are expected to simulate low-level coastal transits and intense over-sea operations.

Airspace restrictions are active from 10am on Monday until midnight on Friday. Because the exercise explicitly involves over-sea operations, the Island’s coastal vantage points will offer the best chances of a sighting. Look towards the high cliffs of Culver Down, the Needles, and the southern beaches to catch a glimpse of the action.

While daylight hours will see the bulk of the training, defense sources note that scheduled military night flying is also expected that week. Islanders should keep their ears open for the distinct roar of jet engines cutting through the late-evening silence. Keep your cameras at the ready, and remember that all sorties remain subject to local weather conditions.
