This year’s Swim for Hope raised a record-breaking £31,000 for Wessex Cancer Support, with 28 swimmers completing the early morning Solent crossing on Saturday.
The annual event, which began in 2021, has now raised nearly £140,000 for the charity, which provides emotional and practical support for people affected by cancer across the south and the Isle of Wight.
Swimmers set off from Hurst Point, just before sunrise at 4.45am, reaching Colwell Bay on the Island shortly after 6am. They were supported by a team of kayakers, safety boats and land-based volunteers.
Laura Haytack, regional fundraising manager for Wessex Cancer Support, said: “Swim for Hope is always an incredible event, and this year was no exception. The atmosphere is full of nerves, excitement and community spirit. To see so many people come together with such determination was truly inspiring. We’re so grateful to everyone who made it possible.”
There is already a waiting list for the 2026 event, and pre-registration is now open.
Funds raised will help provide counselling, complementary therapies, support groups and transport services, including Daisy Bus journeys for Islanders travelling to mainland cancer appointments. To find out more about the charity’s services, visit www.wessexcancer.org.uk.
