Anniversary of loan blood-pressure monitor

September marks the first anniversary of the IW Council’s free blood-pressure monitor loan scheme.

High blood-pressure is often called the “silent killer”, because it rarely shows symptoms but can lead to serious health problems such as heart attacks and strokes.

The scheme allows Island residents to borrow a monitor for free, helping them to keep an eye on their health. Since its launch in September 2024, more than 240 monitors have been loaned out from local libraries, giving people the chance to track their blood pressure at home and seek medical advice if needed.

The monitors are available to borrow from seven Island libraries: Lord Louis (Newport), Cowes, Ventnor, Sandown, Ryde, Freshwater and East Cowes. Library staff say the scheme has been warmly welcomed.

A spokesman from Ventnor Library said: “Our customers think the service is wonderful and they can’t believe that it’s free!” A member of staff, from Ryde Library, added: “Customers are delighted; it’s so easy to use at their leisure in the comfort of their own homes.” Around one in four adults in the UK has high blood pressure without realising it.

Knowing your blood pressure numbers means you can take simple steps, from lifestyle changes to seeking medical support, to bring your blood pressure under control.

The scheme is open to all residents aged 18+ with a valid library membership.
