WIGHT IN WESTMINSTER: Richard Quigley MP – Labour MP for IW West

Over the last decade, 16 banks have shut on the Island. You may think why does that matter in an increasingly cashless society. But not everyone has access to on-line banking. That’s why banking hubs offer a lifeline to individuals and communities alike.

Politics can sometimes feel like a contest of who can shout the loudest, with real outcomes taking a back-seat. That’s why I’m especially pleased to share the following update: a new temporary banking hub will be opening in East Cowes in April 2025, while a permanent location is sought in Cowes – meaning constituents will have easier access to essential banking services.

This was an issue people raised with me time and time again during the election campaign, so I’m really glad that Island residents can access the services they so clearly need.

Speaking of outcomes, I was also glad to see that this government had selected the Isle of Wight Youth Hub as one of twenty-four early support hubs selected to receive top-up investment, providing vital support for children and young people across the Island. This is what politics — and this Labour government — is about: supporting the most vulnerable in our society, and ensuring mental health support is available early, before crisis point is reached.

This government is determined to drive economic growth – and we have a real opportunity to support that through our long-neglected shipyard industry. That is why I was proud to take part in my first Westminster Hall debate, where I had the opportunity to talk about the Island’s shipyards, and discuss this government’s pro-shipyard approach. When I was elected, I promised to always champion the Island in Westminster, and that’s exactly what I’m doing.

On the Island, I visited Rheinmetall Electronics in Newport last Friday, and saw the cutting-edge electronics they produce right here. Following the Chancellor’s spring statement, I also welcome the news that the defence industry will receive an additional £2.2bn next year. I’m confident businesses on the Island will continue our legacy of innovation, and that the Government’s investment will continue to support good-quality, well-paid, jobs for Islanders.
