Solid Shanklin’s promotion push in this week’s cricket

Arreton Hawks U-11s

The weekend saw Shanklin & Godshill Cricket Club move to second spot in the league, after skipper and all-rounder Ben White hit 48 and took 4 wickets. There was a century from Ventnor’s Ethan Short, and 4 wickets for Nathan Short. A ton for Shanklin third XI from Steve Egerton-Read was not enough to avoid defeat.

Southern Premier and Hampshire

Ventnor remain in second place in Southern Premier Division One, after convincingly winning by 110 runs away at Sarisbury Athletic. Batting first, opener, Josh Carpenter, hit 41, and Will Mew’s boundary 59, as the Island side were all out for 211 in the 50th over. Ventnor’s bowling attack limited Sarisbury to 101 all out in the 36th over, with Archie Lucy and Dan Cox taking 3 wickets each, and Tom Southcott 2 catches.

In Hants Division Two B, Ryde lost by 40 runs away at Hythe & Dibden, with the Islanders bowling Hythe out for 166 in the 45th over. There were 3 wickets for Ash Goldsmith and 2 for Nathan Day, with 3 run-outs recorded. In reply, Ryde struggled against an aggressive attack, with Andy Day top scoring with 29, as they were bowled out for 126 in the 37th over.

Ventnor II lost by 2 wickets at home to Bramshaw. Batting first, the Islanders lost wickets and reached 63-7. A partnership of 162 between skipper, Ben Davies (50 not out), and Ethan Short (101 not out), helped them set a target of 225-7 in 45 overs. The visitors kept to the run-rate despite wickets falling at regular intervals, with Chris Russell claiming 4-37 as Bramshaw scored 229-8 in the 43rd over.

Shanklin & Godshill moved to second place in Division Three B, after winning by 34 runs at home to Bedhampton Mariners. The Westhill side batted first to set a target of 265-6, including 40 from opener, Matt Lambourne, 42 from Harry Collier, and 48 from skipper, Ben White. In reply, all-rounder White claimed 4-41 as the visitors were all out for 231 in the 40th over.

Island Leagues

In Division One, Northwood won by 6 wickets away at St Helens. Opener Jack Winterbottom hit 60, followed by an unbeaten 74 from Lee Brown, for St Helens to set 171-7 from 40 overs, and Steve Keates taking 4-17 for Northwood. In reply, opener Martyn Richards struck an unbeaten 64 from a total of 173-4 in the 37th over.

Batting first, Ventnor III won by 112 runs at home to Wight Whizzers. Captain Gary Legg struck 87 runs before being bowled by Jkp Jinu, as Ventnor set a target of 195-8 in 40 overs. The Whizzers struggled with the run rate and lost regular wickets. Opener Midhun Padamadan Devassy top-scored with 19 off 38 balls, with Jackson Parker taking 3-36, and 2 wickets each for Harrison McQuillan, Rafe Hawkins and James Curtis, as Whizzers were all out for 83 in the 23rd over.

In Division Two, Freshwater beat Shanklin & Godshill III by 86 runs at home, with Freshwater scoring 301-5 from 35 overs. This included 75 from skipper, Gary Freeston, and 52 from opener, Graham Gosden, and Shanklin’s Nathan Moore and Max Bushby-Harris took 2 wickets each. In reply, Shanklin opener, Steve Egerton-Read, hit 105 from a total of 215-9 at the close of play.

Leaders, Newport II, won by 7 wickets at home to Ventnor IV, with Ventnor batting first and scoring 94 all out in the 30th over. In response, ‘Port reached 95-3 in the 25th over to win the match.

Ryde II conceded their match with Newport.

Youth Cricket

In an action-packed day at Newclose, Arreton Hawks won the U-11 Plate competition, winning two matches, including a close final against Northwood Superchargers.
