Shanklin’s Age Concern 50+ Club celebrated its 50th birthday with a special cream tea, following a varied programme of activities attended by the Mayor of Shanklin, Sarah Sheath.
Voluntary co-ordinator, Heather Whitchurch, said: “The club started in Regent Street, in the warm summer of August 1976, and is still going strong and meeting the needs of local residents.
“It’s been a very busy summer for all involved, and we are always grateful for the volunteers who go the extra mile, like in the carnival!”
As part of the celebrations, the club took part in Shanklin Carnival, held a dance, and members of the club formed a rock band ‘The Tuesdays’ .
Attendee, Irene Dawson, who celebrated her 101st birthday at the party, added: “It’s a really fun and friendly facility, and the dedicated team of volunteers is always on hand to help the members – and the food is excellent.”
