Santa surprises at SEN Christmas party

The Isle of Wight SEN support group, together with Rainbow Club IW, brought festive cheer to 40 Island children last Sunday, with an accessible Christmas party which was full of surprises.

The community‑focused group of parents, carers, and volunteers created a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with children enjoying snacks, playground activities, and dancing to the DJ’s music. A glittering Christmas tree, and life-sized inflatable Santas, added to the merriment.

Excitement grew when Father Christmas made a surprise entrance, chatting with families, and encouraging even the shyest children to join in. He entertained the crowd with a tale of Rudolph’s youthful antics, before slipping into the sensory room, where children played quietly or relaxed in pop‑up tents.

The highlight came when volunteer elves wheeled in a huge trolley stacked high with personalised presents. Each child received a gift donated by the Salvation Army or the IW Radio Christmas Toy Appeal.

As names were called out, children waited patiently for their turn, while parents captured photos with Father Christmas – including one youngster fast asleep in a chair. One child tested Santa’s beard with a curious “Is it soft?”, while another persisted in offering chocolates until one was finally accepted.

A senior elf said: “It was wonderful to see every young person’s face light up when they interacted with the decorations or Father Christmas. We are so grateful to all who gave up so much of their time and energy.”

Father Christmas added his thanks to the volunteers: “They worked tirelessly to make the rooms spotless and joyful, only hours before the party began. For making it magical, thank you!”
