It was a picture-perfect moment for Sandy Steen – a photograph showing Cowes RNLI’s lifeboat on safety patrol at the start of the famous Round the Island Race.
The framed photograph of the Atlantic 85 ‘Sheena Louise’, taken by Nick Edwards, was a farewell gift from the crew to mark his stepping down as a Deputy Launch Authority. The Round the Island background should strike a special cord with Sandy, being a yachtsman and having a home overlooking the harbour.
Lifeboat Operations Manager Mark Southwell said: “During his six years as a DLA Sandy has been an important part of the management team which brought the new RNLI station to full operational integration within the RNLI methods of training and launching for rescues.”
“His, quiet, calm, professional manner will be remembered with fondness by the crew.”
The son of a Trinity House pilot and growing up in Gurnard, he returned to the Island on his retirement from business on the mainland.
