The RSPCA Isle of Wight is calling on the community for urgent help, as demand for its services continues to rise.
The independent branch is caring for more animals with complex needs – including strays, victims of cruelty, rescues from the illegal pet trade, and elderly pets requiring palliative care. Many cannot be rehomed immediately, due to ongoing legal proceedings, meaning the charity must provide months of food, shelter, rehabilitation and veterinary care – all at significant cost.
“It costs £750,000 a year just to keep the centre running,” said branch director, Steve Backhouse. “Our vet bills alone total £76,000 annually. Many people don’t realise that less than 5 per cent of our income comes from the national RSPCA. We rely almost entirely on local donations – every pound makes a difference.”
As part of its latest campaign, the charity is asking Islanders to donate whatever they can – every gift stays on the Island. Islanders are also encouraged to share the appeal on social media, take part in or organise a local fund-raiser, and join events such as the Spider Ride or Fire Walk Challenge.
“Every animal we help has a story – and often, a long road to recovery,” said Steve. “With the community’s support, we can give each one a haven – and a happy ending.”
