Parish Council take on Wightlink over pricing

Freshwater Parish Council (FPC) has formally raised concerns over Wightlink’s use of dynamic pricing on the Yarmouth–Lymington ferry route, calling it ‘exorbitant’ and damaging to residents and local businesses.

Cllr Warren Whyte’s motion, passed this week, requests an update from Wightlink on steps being taken to make the crossing more affordable and end the pricing strategy, which adjusts fares based on demand. Councillors also criticised the lack of advertising for Wightlink’s public meetings, noting the parish was not informed of a recent community event in Yarmouth.

Wightlink responded that it had not yet received communication from FPC but was “more than happy” to meet and discuss feedback. A spokesman said the company regularly engages with groups including MPs, NHS partners, and the Solent Transport User Group (STUG – formerly Wightlink User Group), and has made changes based on community input.

STUG voiced full support for FPC, stating that dynamic pricing undermines access to the mainland and disproportionately affects Islanders. They cited the Islanders’ Charter, signed in December 2024 by both MPs and all councillors, which calls for independent evaluation of pricing models to ensure fairness.
Wightlink said it would improve promotion of its quarterly ‘Meet the Team’ events and welcomed further dialogue.
