Wessex Cancer Support is seeking local volunteers to help ensure the safety of participants during the annual Swim for Hope event, taking place on Saturday, July 19. With swimmers set to tackle the 1.3-mile stretch of open water, from Hurst Castle to Colwell Bay, additional kayakers and support boats are desperately needed.
While the challenge has sold out, the charity has emphasised that the event’s success hinges on the presence of skilled volunteers to accompany swimmers and ensure their safety. Last year’s Swim for Hope saw 27 participants raise an impressive £26,438 for Islanders affected by cancer, but the event cannot happen without safety measures in place.
“Vital volunteers ensure the safety of all swimmers as they cross the Solent,” said Laura Haytack, from the charity. “Without them, the event wouldn’t go ahead, and we would miss the opportunity to raise this incredible amount of money to support those affected by cancer. Please do help us if you can.”
Jamie Webster, owner of headline sponsor, RenoDrain, will be joining the team on his kayak to ensure swimmers make the crossing safely. “We highly commend all who are taking part and thank everyone who donates to raise funds and awareness for Wessex Cancer Support,” he said.
Wessex Cancer Support provides both practical and emotional support to Islanders affected by cancer. This includes a wellbeing centre in Newport and a free minibus service for patients travelling to and from hospital appointments, carrying over 10,000 passenger journeys annually.
