Aspire Ryde has announced its mobile pantry service is to close at the end of this month, citing funding challenges, low attendance, and other limitations compared to the static pantry model.
The pop-up pantries due to close are at Shanklin United Reformed Church, Chale Village Hall, Freshwater Memorial Hall, and Shalfleet Village Hall.
The mobile pantry was launched with the aim of addressing food insecurity across the Island, particularly in rural areas, by offering a limited selection of low-cost food items to the public. However, the model has proved to be unsustainable due to limited usage, high operational costs, and feedback from the community. The model is expensive, due to travel costs, and the need to set up and pack down on each occasion. While the mobile pantry does not have any element of means testing, some feedback indicates that a number of users are not in financial need; this is a group that Aspire particularly wants to support, and help to a position where they no longer need assistance with food provision.
“The mobile pantry simply isn’t the most efficient way to support those in need in our community,” said a spokesman for Aspire. “We have offered the pop-up pantries to all other existing Island pantries to take over and run, including handing over the van and other equipment for free. None have taken up this offer.”
Unlike at its static pantry, the mobile pantry has also struggled to provide the added wrap-around services Aspire prides itself on, such as financial advice and emotional well-being, which are integral to their mission of fostering community resilience.
Aspire Ryde is now redirecting its efforts toward developing other sustainable initiatives, including looking into offering two more static pantry locations, one in Shanklin, and introducing new ‘Kindness Bags’ for those in immediate need. Working in partnership with the Isle of Wight Council, they are aiming to create solutions that make a meaningful difference to the Island’s most vulnerable residents.
“We remain committed to ensuring no one on the Isle of Wight goes hungry,” added the Aspire spokesman. Anyone seeking cost-of-living support can visit iw.observer/costofliving for information.
