Vectis Searchers Metal Detecting Club (VSMDC) is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. The club is believed to be one of the oldest metal detecting clubs in the UK.
VSMDC held its presentation evening recently, which this year included a brand new award; The Richard Armiger Trophy recognises the best find over the year, as voted by members. This new trophy was named in honour of their long-standing chairman.
Over the years, VSMDC has established an excellent reputation among archaeologists and archaeological institutions, including an invitation to attend A Big Dig at Brading Roman Villa, to help Professor Sir Barry Cunliffe, of Oxford University with excavations, English Heritage at Carisbrooke Castle, and Channel 4’s Time Team programme at Yaverland.
Recently they assisted with a dig at the site of the IW Festival for BBC’s The One Show.
To celebrate its 40th anniversary, the club plans to showcase some amazing finds at the Guildhall, Newport, through the summer months.
While club members enjoy their hobby they also raise substantial funds for various charities. Last year they donated £1,000 to Mountbatten, and they have also supported Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, Friends of the Animals and Sandown Aircraft Museum.
The club will be displaying artefacts and coins and will be pleased to answer any questions you may have on metal detecting at Wolverton Manor Garden Fair on August 30 & 31.
