LOOK BACK IN TIME: 4 August 1855

The Isle of Wight Observer published on the 4th August, 1855 carried this tale of true love not running smoothly.

PETTY SESSIONS
[…]
Jacob Lane was summoned by Serena Louin Blindfold to provide sureties of the peace. It appeared that the complainant and defendant had lived together as man and wife for the last 15 years. The complainant said, she was determined not to live with him any longer, in consequence of his continued ill treatment and abusive language towards her. The defendant said, he should not have done as he had only that the complainant had left him and taken up with another man.
The magistrate bound him over in his own recognizance of £10, which he said “he should be content with if they would allow him to say good morning my dear, or good evening my dear as he met her, for he did love her better than any other woman he ever seen, and he would speak to her.”
