Three young Islanders are taking part in a major international Scouting event in Portugal, joining nearly 500 UK representatives and 9,000 Scouts from around the world.
Liam Downer, Jamie Dowsett and Lawrence Rutherford are attending the 16th World Scout moot, a global gathering of Scouts aged 18–25 which began in Lisbon on July 25, and concludes in Porto.
The event includes a four-day expedition across rural parts of Portugal, where participants team up with Scouts from other countries to explore local communities and cultures. The group will then return to a main camp, in Ovar, for skill-building activities and international exchange before the closing ceremony.
Liam, a production co-ordinator, said: “I’ve never been on an international Scout trip before, so I’m really looking forward to finding out what Portugal has to offer.”
Jamie, a water-sports instructor, added: “This is going to be a real adventure. I’m most excited to explore historic Portuguese villages and grow more independent.”
Lawrence, a trainee dispensing optician, said he was “excited to explore the city of Coimbra” as part of his route.
This year’s moot theme is ‘Engage’, encouraging participants to connect through shared experiences and cultural understanding.
Chief Scout, Dwayne Fields, sent a message of support: “This is an amazing opportunity to create lasting memories, friendships and skills. Good luck to Liam, Jamie and Lawrence; we’re proud to have you representing the UK and the Isle of Wight.”
