In this weekend’s cricket Ryde secured a well-earned  win, Ventnor II top table ‘ducks’ were seen on St Helens Green with a 5 wicket haul for Aaron Hartup and an impressive ton at Northwood, were the stand-out performances for Island sides toiling under the mid-summer sun this weekend.

Southern Premier & Hampshire Leagues

Ventnor lost their Premier Division One encounter at Andover by 5 wickets, with Dineth Thimodya (33), Henry Edwards (37), Will Mew (30) and Sam Mills (30) helping the Islanders reach 183 all out. Dan Cox’s 2-39 wasn’t enough to stop Andover score 188-5 in the 41st over to claim the win.

In Hants Division One, Ryde won by 2 wickets at home to Portsmouth, who were bowled out for 197. There were strong early partnerships, with Ian Hailes taking 4-25 and Ash Goldsmith 3-22, with a wicket apiece for Ben Gregory and Matt Webb. After the break opener, Kerry Rice (36), shared half-century partnerships with Dan Attrill (26) and Tom Durman (28), with runs throughout the batting order. Ryde secured victory for the loss of 8 wickets in the 45th over.

In Division Three, leaders Ventnor II won by 72 runs at home to Verwood, with the Islanders 202-8 off 45 overs, including 57 from Jack Powell and an unbeaten 24 from skipper Ben Davies. Chris Russell, Hugh Calloway and Ben Attrill took 2 wickets apiece to skittle Verwood out for 130 and claim the points.

Shanklin & Godshill lost a nail-biting match at Westhill, by 2 runs against Old Tauntonians & Romsey 2nd XI, with the visitors all out for 228 on the last ball of their innings. Harry Moore took 3-42, and there were 2 wickets each for Ben White, Tom Quaife and Matt Lambourne. Olly Niemiec (55) and Seb Egerton-Read (93) shared a 136 run partnership, but the Islanders lost momentum and finished their 40 overs 2 runs short of their target for the loss of 6 wickets.

In Division Four, Ryde II XI lost by 7 wickets away at Portsmouth, with openers Mark Oatley and skipper Geoff Kite both scoring 25. Simon Berendt added 27 with the Island side finishing all out for 147 in 42nd over. Portsmouth had a solid start, with the Islander’s’ Liam Ringer taking 2-39 but unable to make inroads as the mainland side reached their target in the 22nd over.

 

Island Leagues

Division One leaders Newport won by 4 wickets away at St Helens. The village side  lost openers Mark Watson and Brian Butler for ducks in the first over to  ’Ports’ hardworking Aaron Hartup, who took 5-20. The home side were all out for 78, with Ollie Stubbings top-scoring with 28. In reply, unbeaten opener Harry Dye (33) helped Newport reach 79-6 in the 18th over, with Marc Allen taking 3-28.

Northwood won by 66 runs away at Ventnor III. Simon Goldsmith’s 44 helped Northwood reach 211 all outvwith Latha Mohan taking 3-40. In reply Nathan Goldsmith took 3-54 and Simon Goldsmith 3-23 to help limit Ventnor to 145 all out, with Brett Hassett top-scoring with 56.

Division Two leaders, Newport II XI won by 32 runs at home to Ventnor IV. Opener Olly Pease top-scored with 71, as ’Port reached 179-5, off 35 overs. After the break, skipper Adam Goulding scored 34 from a total of 147 all out, with Anthony Rajan taking 3-22 for Newport.

Shanklin suffer narrow defeat at Westhill

Northwood II XI won by 5 wickets at home to Shanklin & Godshill III. Jeff Barrett (61) and opener/skipper Martyn Richards (57) helped Northwood score 229-5, with 3 wickets for Shanklin’s Will Kent. A score of 121 from Shanklin opener Glen Speller helped Shanklin reach 162-8, with 2 wickets apiece for Neil Redmond and Liam Roberts.

 

Next weekend’s fixtures

Ventnor host Portsmouth, Ryde travel to Bashley, Ventnor II visit Old Netley & Highfield and Shanklin travel to Verwood and Ryde II welcome Calmore Sports.

In Island leage games Newport host Freshwater, Shanklin & Godshill II are at home to Northwood and St Helens entertain Ventnor. Northwood II are home to Newport II in a table-topping test.

Ventnor IV welcome Shanklin III in the Fred Winter Cup.
