Help to get the Reds over Ryde for Armed Forces Day

The much loved Red Arrows could once again grace the skies above Ryde this summer, with organisers saying the display is now “within touching distance”.

Ian Dore, organiser of Armed Forces Day, confirmed this week that efforts to secure the world famous aerobatic team are progressing well, although funding remains the final hurdle. “Like many events this year, Armed Forces Day has faced its share of challenges,” he said.

“When it comes to securing the Red Arrows, we’re almost there.”

A crowd-funding campaign, launched last week, has already raised over £3,280, thanks to generous donations from local businesses.

Among the first to pledge support was Kev Coghlan, of Coghlan Plant Hire & Transport, who sponsored Red 5, drawing a light-hearted link to the iconic X-wing pilot Luke Skywalker’s aircraft in Star Wars.

Also backing the campaign is Island businessman, Geoff Underwood. The IFPL founder and Deputy Lord-Lieutenant, who previously served as High Sheriff, has sponsored Red 1, piloted by Squadron Leader Jon Bond.

With the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight already confirmed, Ian said: “The Red Arrows would be the icing on the cake.” However, the deadline is looming, organisers have until Thursday morning to confirm arrangements, with just under £3,000 still needed.

“To any businesses or Armed Forces Covenant supporters yet to contribute, now’s the time,” Ian urged. He added: “Huge thanks to all who’ve helped so far; your support means everything to our armed forces community.”
