A Christmas light display in Newport has raised nearly £6,000 for IW Prostate Cancer Support, a new record.

Terry Ramplin, whose display is at his home in Long Lane, has been putting up his lights for the last 24 years for a variety of Island charities, but for the last three years all his efforts have been put into prostate cancer.

The money pays for PSA testing throughout the year across the Island, and Terry said: “It was an absolutely superb total for the charity.

“The PSA representatives were so pleased when I handed over the cheque; they had no idea how much money I had raised.

“It’s the highest amount I have raised in all my time fund-raising. As well as contributions into our buckets, I approached some local businesses who made their own contributions to such a good cause.

“I have now raised around £12,000 over the last three years, and I’m told this may have saved 60 lives. If you know you have helped to save one life you are doing well, so this is an amazing feeling.

“I would also like to thank our amazing knitters who make and sell Christmas tree decorations, and Island Marquees and StageGear who donate our marquee and stage which are set up in the garden.”
