Floating bridge team raises funds for VE Day

In a heartfelt tribute to the 80th anniversary of VE Day, the team operating Cowes Floating Bridge transformed their daily duties into a moving act of remembrance and fund-raising. On May 8, with the backing of IW Council leader, Phil Jordan, all fares were waived for the day, with passengers invited to make a donation to the Royal British Legion (RBL) instead.

The floating bridge was decked with traditional VE Day bunting, and the atmosphere was filled with wartime nostalgia. Adding a special touch to the event was “Tilly”, a 1940s tea car accompanied by an ARP Warden.

The community responded with generosity, raising £2,600 for the RBL. For many staff members, the day held personal significance as it honoured the memory of their late colleague, Dave Todd, a well-known supporter of the Ryde branch of the legion.

Deputy manager, Paul Turner, said: “We were absolutely blown away by the generosity of our passengers. It wasn’t just about the money raised, it showed the enduring strength of community spirit.”

Lynn Ashby, from the RBL, gratefully accepted the donation and praised the team’s efforts: “Without people like yourselves, we couldn’t do the work we do,” she said.

The team thanks everyone who donated, explaining the event was a proud and fitting way to remember those who served.
