Organisers of the first-ever Cowes Fringe have released details of the first acts which will deliver ‘an explosion of art and culture’ across the town this May, with more promised soon.
The weekend of entertainment for all ages will take place on May 26 to 28 across a number of unique venues across the town. Showcasing both local and national talent, the local team is drawing on the experience and contacts of a number of West End professionals.
The first acts to be announced include a gala evening from actress, Claire Sweeney, whose decade in Channel Four soap, Brookside, led to a successful and varied career on stage and screen. Claire will close the fringe telling stories from her career and singing songs, accompanied by West End pianist, Jae Alexander. She said, “I am honoured to be taking part in the inaugural Cowes Fringe and can’t wait to be on the Isle of Wight for the first time.”
Other acts include policeman turned stand-up comedian, Alfie Moore, star of comedy series ‘It’s a Fair Cop’ on Radio Four, the classic family tale of Pinocchio – presented by Steve Tiplady, street artist and mural painter Jim Vision, who will undertake two public events at secret locations and Mig Kimpton, who will tell tales from his career of running West End theatres and managing tours for an assortment of stars.
Also appearing are Island jazz singer, Nina Ross, local drag act, Quivers, and Irish folk singer, John Blek. More acts will be announced soon.
Mayor of Cowes, Cllr Paul Bertie, welcomed the plans. He said: “An event of this nature has been a long time coming. I know the team and volunteers behind the Cowes Fringe are all passionate about it and truly dedicated to making the event a huge success.
“I know Cowes will support it with enthusiasm!”
