Islanders are invited to a special film and talk event next week, celebrating the Isle of Wight’s proud contribution to lifeboat building, as part of the countdown to the RNLI’s 200th anniversary, in May.

Hosted by Friends of Northwood Cemetery, the event takes place on Monday, January 26, at 2pm, in the Heritage Resource Centre, Northwood Cemetery, Newport Road, Cowes. Admission is free, with a retiring collection for the East Cowes Heritage Centre.

The session will feature a new film by Ken Wheeler, commissioned to highlight the Island’s role in lifeboat construction – particularly the work of the Inshore Lifeboat Centre in East Cowes, which continues to build vessels for the RNLI today, but whose future is under threat due to a reorganisation.

The film includes archive footage, photographs and interviews with boatbuilders past and present, offering a rare insight into the craftsmanship and dedication behind lifeboat design and production.

Organisers say the event is a chance to reflect on the Island’s maritime heritage and the lives saved through the RNLI’s work. With the charity marking two centuries of service in 2024, the film also honours the generations of Islanders who have contributed to lifeboat innovation and safety.

Due to limited space, attendees are encouraged to book in advance by contacting Stella (01983 281597), Roger (07812 850858) or Bazz (07834 466007).

Whether you’re a maritime enthusiast, a supporter of the RNLI, or simply curious about the Island’s boatbuilding history, this event promises a fascinating afternoon of storytelling and celebration.
