Two detectives, whose work helped secure an eight-year jail sentence after a rape in Newport, were among those recognised at the latest Isle of Wight Area Commander’s Awards.

DC Ashlea-Paige Butt and DC Daniel Cooke received Area Commander’s Certificates for their investigation into the case, which led to Stephen Rennie, of Cypress Place, Inverness, being jailed in April, after a rape reported in Newport in 2023.

The ceremony was held at Newport Congregational Church on Tuesday, April 14, hosted by Chief Inspector Andrew McDonald.

Senior guests included the Lord-Lieutenant, Susie Sheldon, High Sheriff, Nigel Hartley, Alexis Boon, and Tara McGovern. New superintendent, Marcus Cator, was also present.

DC Cooke was also recognised alongside Independent Sexual Violence Advisers, Deborah Gearing, Judi King, Mickayla Mulholland, and Shanice Harris for their work on a separate rape case.

Their support for victims helped secure an 18-year sentence in April last year for Keith Matthews, of Wootton Bridge, on eight counts of non-recent sexual offences against three children in Ryde and East Cowes between 1994 and 2012.

The evening also included a presentation to retiring superintendent, Rob Mitchell, after more than 30 years in policing, including his final three years leading the Island.

Chief Constable Boon praised the “incredible work” of officers, staff, volunteers, and members of the public, while Superintendent Cator said he was “incredibly proud” of those serving Island communities.
