Major road improvement work will take place in the upper High Street, Newport, from Monday.
The work will see the upper High Street closed between its Pyle Street and St James’ St junctions – effectively making the section a pedestrianised area during the scheme.
Work is scheduled to last eight working days (not including weekends) with a full road closure required throughout the project.
Mill Street will become two-way during the work, although there will be no entry to the High Street.
A full closure is required because the work involves strengthening the foundations of the road and requires deeper-than-usual excavations.
An Island Roads spokesman said: “It was a pleasure to visit businesses in the upper High Street recently to explain more about the work, and we are hugely grateful for the understanding and co-operation they have shown.
“Upper High Street will be very much open for business, so it will still be a good time for people to visit the shops, pubs, and restaurants, for some post-Christmas cheer and bargains.”
