Pantomime returned to the Memorial Hall, in Freshwater, as The New Strolling Players celebrated 50 years since pantomime was first staged at the venue.

The anniversary production saw the group present its own interpretation of The Snow Queen, marking half a century since Aladdin was performed there in 1975.

The story followed the evil Snow Queen, played by Peri Ryan, who, with the help of her magic mirror, and sidekicks, Jack Frost, portrayed by Rowanna Earle-Payne, and Snowbell, played by Cheryl May, whisked young hero, Kay, away to her ice palace in the frozen north. Kay, played by Thomas Dangerfield, is pursued by his determined best friend, Gerda, portrayed by Bea Holmes, who sets off on a rescue mission accompanied by Granny Rose, played by Lewis Pavey, and Handy Annie, played by Chantal Eagles.

True to pantomime tradition, the production featured audience participation, slapstick comedy, double entendres, singing, and dancing, with good ultimately triumphing over evil just in time for Christmas.

The show was performed over four days from December 11 to 14, with all five performances selling out. The continued popularity of the pantomime reflects its reputation as a well-supported community event, with proceeds donated to charity.

One performance was enjoyed by around 60 members of Freshwater Bay WI, who swapped their traditional Christmas party for a trip to the theatre. They went along to support Peri Ryan, one of their members who appeared in the title role.
