Big-hearted bikers deliver Easter eggs

By Press Release Apr 7, 2023

Around 120 Island riders took part in the annual Easter Egg Run delivering eggs to special needs homes.

The motorbikes delivered 75 eggs to Pleane Dean, Shanklin, Beaulieu House, Newport, Hazel Wood House, East Cowes, and Newton Lodge, Ryde.

Organiser, Pete Atkinson, said: “There were a few hiccups along the way because nothing ever goes 100 per cent, but I think everyone enjoyed themselves.

“It was a nice day for riding and we did have a great ride; it’s always a worthwhile thing to do. The event also raises money for charity.

“We ask the riders to put in £1 and, maybe, an Easter egg, and the money pays for a buffet at the end and, with other donations, whatever is left is given to our chosen charity.

“This year, it’s Forgotten Veterans’ UK Breakfast Club, Ryde, and we had £90 left over which we will give them.”

Veteran, Buster Spicer, who will shortly celebrate his 70th birthday by riding to the Scottish Highlands, was given the honour of being first motorcyclist in to Newton Lodge.

He said: “Newton Lodge is very special to me. Every year, I make sure I’m the first bike into the car park. All the residents come out to greet me. One year they really broke my heart after they made me an Easter card.

“These people are not mentally disabled; they are really special and I love meeting them every year. Sometimes, if I’m in Ryde shopping, they see me while they are with their carers, and always call out ‘Buster!’ and say hello. Each one of these lovely people has a big heart.”
